På Gång (pronounced po gong) is part Swedish class, part social/service club for young people ages 13 to 18 who are interested in Sweden, learning and practicing Swedish, and having fun! På Gång meets one Sunday per month and includes a language class, fika, and an activity. Meetings are supplemented with chances to meet between classes, e-mail updates, optional homework activities, and service-learning volunteer opportunities.
For more information, please see the På Gång registration form.
Lucia Choir
For many families, the holiday season just isn’t complete without taking part in the Lucia Choir. Young women and men, as well as boys and girls ages four and over are welcome. Swedish language ability is not necessary, and we will teach you all the songs. Participants’ immediate family must be an ASI Household member or higher.
Rehearsals are held at the American Swedish Institute on Sundays from late October through December. Ages 4-9 meet from 1:00 - 1:45, and ages 10 and over meet from 2:00 - 3:15.
For more information about the Lucia Choir, contact our Youth & Family Programs Coordinator at 612-870-3374.

Every year, the American Swedish Institute chooses a young woman of distinction between 16 and 22 years old to be Lucia. Since 2010, we also choose a young man (16-22 years of age) to be Head Starboy.
Preference is given to those who show current or past participation in Swedish or Swedish-American programs, including Lucia choirs.
The deadline for applications is November 1 at 5 p.m. Application forms for Lucia and Head Starboy can be downloaded here.
The American Swedish Institute, founded in 1929, serves as a gathering place for people to share stories and experiences around universal themes of tradition, migration, craft and the arts, all informed by enduring ties to Sweden.
Slojd (Swedish Handcraft)
Thanks in part to a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, the American Swedish Institute is offering seven handcraft workshops for youth this academic year as part of our “A Year of Swedish Slojd” program. Workshop topics include ceramic tile, woodcarving, birch bark craft, felting, glass fusing, straw or wheat weaving, and wire craft.
Family Programs
The American Swedish Institute offers an array of family-friendly programs and events, including holiday celebrations, special programs for preschoolers, family days, storytime, and much more!
Bring the whole family to one of our annual Christmas Fairs, ASI’s Midsommar Celebration, or to hunt for Easter eggs at “Easter in the Castle.”
