Papercut! The Incredible Psaligraphy of Karen Bit Vejle
Discover the incredible psaligraphy of Danish-Norwegian artist Karen Bit Vejle. Meet “Bit” at the Papercut! opening reception and artist talk on Friday, January 24.
Denmark rightfully boasts a long tradition of papercutting, or psaligraphy as it is referred to in the technical sense, thanks in large part to the work of H.C. Andersen. Danish-Norwegian Karen Bit Vejle repurposes those traditions for a contemporary audience, creating wall-sized works with elaborate and delicate detail. Playful, almost unexpected motifs, like a ballet dancer sharing space with a bulldog, recur throughout her work.
Papercut! is complemented by original works of Minneapolis psaligraphy artist and ASI Artist in Residence Sonja Peterson, Metatranslations: Ed Bok Lee's Intervention in the ASI Library and Archives, and the premiere of “My Life as a Fairytale” by Open Eye Figure Theater – an original play based on the legacy of Denmark’s most renowned playwright and children’s author Hans Christian Andersen.
Papercut! The Incredible Psaligraphy of Karen Bit Vejle is made possible through individual gifts from donors, ASI members and support from the Anne Ray Charitable Trust, Bergren Family Foundation and the Minnesota State Arts Board.
