Building Community Through School Partnerships
The Phillips West neighborhood, where ASI is located, is one of the most culturally diverse, yet economically challenged areas in Minnesota with approximately 40% of families living below the federal poverty level. ASI provides access to arts and cultural identity curricula through four Minneapolis Public School partnerships:
- Wellstone International High School Story Swap Program - Swedish-American elders and students share their family immigration stories through arts-integrated curriculum.
- Andersen United Elementary School 3rd grade Pippi Project - teaches writing and fictional character development.
- Bancroft Elementary School 4th grade immigration project - supports IB Primary Years curriculum unit and afterschool handcraft enrichment classes.
- Whittier IB Elementary School - hosts afterschool handcraft enrichment classes.
A special thank you to the Marbrook Foundation and the Carolyn Foundation for their generous support of ASI’s community outreach programs.
