ASI in the Community

Building Community Through School Partnerships

"This incredible institution aides in our work in trying to partner with other immigrant communities and recognizing that the story of this building is not just about Swedish immigration, it’s about the American experience." - Former Minneapolis Mayor RT Rybak

The Phillips West neighborhood, where ASI is located, is one of the most culturally diverse, yet economically challenged areas in Minnesota with approximately 40% of families living below the federal poverty level. ASI provides access to arts and cultural identity curricula through four Minneapolis Public School partnerships:
  • Wellstone International High School Story Swap Program  -  Swedish-American elders and students share their family immigration stories through an arts-integrated curriculum.
  • Andersen United Elementary School 3rd grade Pippi Project  -  teaches writing and fictional character development.
  • Bancroft Elementary School 4th grade immigration project  - supports IB Primary Years curriculum unit and afterschool handcraft enrichment classes.
  • Whittier IB Elementary School  - hosts afterschool handcraft enrichment classes.

A special thank you to the Marbrook Foundation for their generous support of ASI’s community outreach programs.

A childhood without books - that would be no childhood. That would be like being shut out from the enchanted place where you can go and find the rarest kind of joy. - Astrid Lindgren
