ASI Forum: "Swedish Handknits" Book Release

Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2012, 6:30-8 p.m.

August’s ASI Forum celebrates the release of the book "Swedish Handknits: A Collection of Heirloom Designs" by authors Sue Flanders and Janine Kosel. Join the authors as they discuss their road to writing, and the inspiration behind this particular book. "Swedish Handknits" is a collection of patterns for sweaters, hats, scarves, mittens, headbands, and bags, all inspired by the historic textiles in the American Swedish Institute's collection. The book also includes vintage photographs of Swedish immigrants, recipes, and photos of the artifacts that inspired the designs, along with a short history of knitting in Sweden.

Sue Flanders has been designing knitwear for more than twenty years. Her patterns have appeared in many publications including Interweave Knits, Knitter’s magazine, Cast-On, and two books by Melanie Falick, Knitting in America and Kids Knits. She lives in the Twin Cities area.

Janine Kosel is an accomplished knitter who has studied under greats like Alice Starmore, Meg Swansen, and Candice Eisner Strict. Kosel works at Three Kitten’s Yarn Shop in St. Paul and teaches knitting and tatting workshops at many Twin Cities area knitting and needlework shops.

Refreshments will be provided following the talk. ASI Forum presentations are included with museum admission. Reservations for this event are encouraged, but not mandatory – call 612-871-4907 to sign up.
