Cocktails at the Castle: Bonfires, Birchwood and Decoupage Revisited
Celebrate the coming of spring on the eve of May Day with a night full of fire, games, music, live art performances, drinks and DIY crafts.
In Sweden and across Europe, April 30 is Valborgsmässoafton, a celebratory festival that’s a bit difficult to say in English, but easy to understand in content—welcoming spring with large bonfires, music and partying late into the night.
At ASI, we’ll be celebrating (and featuring talent from members of our very own FIKA staff) with live music from local bands/artists Teenage Moods, Dan Mariska and the Boys Choir, and Zac HB, plus an ongoing DJ set from Slipmats Radio.
The night includes bonfires, a cash bar, live art performance, and FIKA food stands in ASI’s outdoor courtyard between the historic Turnblad castle and the contemporary Nelson Cultural Center. You’ll have the opportunity to make your own birchwood plaque like those in the exhibition #NameThisExhibit – 1200 Birchwood Plaques from Sweden’s Postfuturistic Society. Come and compare your artistic hand to those of the itinerant, informal artists of the 1950s. Angry Catfish Bicycle Shop + Coffee Bar will be on hand to do bicycle safety checks, minor repairs, and serve coffee.
Ride your bike, bring your helmet in and receive $1 off beverages all night.

Staged between the Castle and the Nelson Cultural Center, the evening features two outdoor live sets by:
8 p.m.– Dan Mariska and the Boys Choir Airtime on radio stations 89.3 The Current and RadioK have catapulted the sounds of Dan Mariska and his band, described as “harmoniously pleasing and a surefire escape for any listener” (AbsolutePunk.net), across the airwaves.
9 p.m. - Teenage Moods Best described as floral rock, sugar pop, hard cute, Teenage Moods is a three piece Minneapolis based-band.
8-10 p.m. - Slipmats Radio brings to you DJs Adatrak and D'Jo. Adatrak has an eclectic sound that can only be heard by playing two tracks at once. D'Jo will set a blaze your shoes with his jukework mastery.
10 p.m. - Live set by hip hop artist, Zac HB. An eccentrically creative hip-hop artist with a background in reggae, blues, and funk, Zac HB's music is consistently both melodic and conversational, plus comes rounded out with an intimate and interactive live set.
Live Art Performance
With the support of The Soap Factory, six contemporary artists will revisit the craft of decoupage under the influence of the heavy sounds of Zac HB. Each artist (from tattoo artists to collage) will bring their tools of choice and spend 30 quick minutes creating their own signature Birchwood Plaque in front of a lively crowd.
Food and beverages
An event at a Castle deserves its own cocktail! FIKA will be serving up two signature drinks - a Barrel-Aged Brandy Manhattan and a French Gimlet. Of course you can also enjoy beer by Indeed Brewing!
Street food by FIKA.
