History of Minnesota’s Cooperative Movement & 612 Sauna Society’s Co-op Launch

Wednesday, March 29, 2017 - 6:30pm

Finnish migration to Minnesota helped inspired the cooperative movement, arguably a permanent fixture of Minnesota’s social identity that, over time, has influenced key businesses, created social movements and continues to generate new projects.  Tom Pierson, of Minnesota Cooperative Education Foundation, presents an informative and engaging look at the history of the cooperative movement in Minnesota, citing examples of where Nordic communities embraced the business structure and how different communities used the cooperative model to create inclusive initiatives.

The evening also includes the special launch of the Metro’s latest cooperative project, the 612 Sauna Society, a grassroots initiative that provides access to the health-based and community-building assets of sauna. 612 Sauna Society Founders and Board Members will provide tours of the mobile sauna, and talk about their plans.

This program is part of ASI’s year-long look at Migration, Identity, and Belonging.  Participants will also receive access to the exhibition, The Weather Diaries.
