Kräftskiva — Crayfish Party 2017

Friday, August 18, 2017 - 6:30pm

KräftskivaCrayfish Party

Doors 6:30 p.m., Dinner 7 p.m.

Experience a not-to-be-missed Swedish style Crayfish Feast at ASI’s popular, annual Kräftskiva!

Tradition has it that crayfish are to be eaten outdoors under colored paper lanterns, with bibs and comic paper hats, complete with live music and drinking songs. The bright red, tasty creatures are served with good bread, strong cheese, salads, Swedish paj (similar to quiche) and, of course, aquavit, beer, or the beverage of your choice. Crayfish are cooked as the Swedes like them – served cold from a brine made from plenty of crown dill, 40 pounds in this case.

Crayfish have been eaten in Sweden since the 16th century, primarily by the aristocracy. Once threatened by overfishing, the season was mostly limited to August. As crayfish rebounded and the once exclusive delicacy became popular with middle classes, the Kräftskiva was re-born as a national festivity for all, marking the end of summer. Seating is at long communal tables, so come prepared to sing, Skål and make new friends!
