Great Makers Exchange 2018

Saturday, August 18, 2018 - 8:45am to 5:00pm

Ready, set, make!

ASI invites you to a gathering for makers, painters, crafters, carvers, weavers and creators. Whether you’re a pro or a weekend DIY-er, Great Makers Exchange is your chance to get a little messy, make something beautiful and connect with fellow craft enthusiasts at ASI.

The Great Makers Exchange Highlights:

  • Two-hour craft workshops in a variety of craft mediums. Your chance to try something new! See the full workshop schedule below.
  • The Makers Market – engage with artists & organizations making and selling their wares
  • Join local fiber artists and business owners to talk about sustainable textiles with the Three River's Fibershed's Featured Maker Talk
  • The Young Makers Studio drop-in craft activities for youth and families
  • Admission to the American Swedish Institute and current exhibits, Gudrun Sjödén: A Colourful Universe and Whimsy + Wonder.
  • Conversations on Craft in the historic Turnblad Mansion and contemporary Nelson Cultural Center
    • 11:30 - Craft and Design In The Turnblad Mansion: Today and Tomorrow/ Then and Now. Experience the historic Turnblad Mansion like never before.  Join Mats Widbom, the newly appointed director of Svensk Form (the Swedish Society of Crafts and Design) and Scott Pollock, ASI’s Director of Exhibitions, Collections and Programs, as they lead the group through the Mansion, sharing both historical examples of where craft and design merge and contemporary examples of where craft and design are going.
    • 2:30 - Color and Pattern. Immerse yourself in a colorful conversation about how our surroundings, history, and others can inspire art, design, and form together with Gudrun Ambassador and award-winning artist Alison Aune.
    • 3:30 - The Stories They Told. Meet Harley Refsal, an internationally recognized figure carver, specializing in flat-plane wood carving as he explores narratives of the craft in The Stories They Told.
    • 4:30 - Whimsy + Wonder. Hear and see how Cecilia Schiller, an accomplished and award-winning woodcarver, incorporates hand-carved figures and decorative elements into her interactive automata sculptures, through her work in Whimsy + Wonder.
