Veterans of Orphei Drängar Concert

The all-male voice choir Veterans of Orphei Drängar (VOD) from Stockholm, Sweden perform at ASI as a part of their 2015 North American tour. The group’s repertoire includes of Nordic composers Edvard Grieg, Hugo Alfvén, and Jean Sibelius, and with international standards including Bridge Over Troubled Water, Fever, Deep River, and more.

This concert features songs in both Swedish and English.

Minneapolis Art Lending Library Open Hours

The Minneapolis Art Lending Library (MALL) affords Twin Cities community members the rare opportunity to borrow original works of art for two month periods, free of charge. The library is open on a bimonthly basis for patrons to browse our collection, and select a piece to take home and enjoy for the next two months. The MALL features a changing selection of contemporary artwork, with a focus on Twin Cities artists. Our collection includes paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, and sculptures.

KBEM Gallery Grooves: Amp Up! The Hagstrom Guitar Sensation

Join ASI and Jazz 88.5 KBEM for a great night celebrating Amp Up! The Hagstrom Guitar Sensation.
 
Gallery Grooves  is  Jazz 88.5 KBEM's relaxed art social hosted by various Twin Cities artists, galleries and art communities.

The event includes free admission to Amp Up! The Hagstrom Guitar Sensation, a curator talk, and live music.

Museum admission will be required for Turnblad Mansion & “The History of Swedish Music in Three Minutes or Less”.

ASI is bringing the Hagström guitar to Minneapolis and putting it in the hands of our best hometown music heroes in this intimate music series in the historic Turnblad Mansion Ballroom.  The second Wednesday of each month (July-October), selected performers will pick-up the Hagström instrument of their choice to reference or play during their performance. Performances limited to 75 seats.

From Stompboxes to Kill Switches – Keeping the Music Alive: A Conversation with Eclipse Music's John Justen

The storied history and iconic artists of the Twin Cities’ music scene would not be the same without nostalgic institutions like the Ten O’Clock Scholar, a Dinkytown venue  that launched hundreds of music careers – including Bob Dylan. Wanting to meet the needs of  a growing music audience interested in amplified music, Ten O’Clock Scholar’s owner Mike Justen took a similar entrepreneurial approach as Swedish guitar maker, Albin Hagstrom.

Curator’s Cocktail Tour: Behind Closed Doors

Have you ever wondered what’s behind all those closed doors in the Turnblad Mansion? Ever felt the urge to sneak past a “Do Not Enter” sign? Now’s your chance. Explore the restricted areas of the Turnblad Mansion on this exclusive tour with curator Curt Pederson. Visitors will walk up the back staircase and explore the walk-in safe, second floor seamstress quarters, third floor servants’ quarters, and the rarely seen attic.

Two unique cocktails and light hors d’oeuvres, all handcrafted by FIKA, will be served during the tour. This is a 21+ event.

Ingela Haaland Performs Swedish Classic Songs (SOLD OUT)

Join us for an evening concert in the historic Turnblad Mansion Ballroom with soprano Ingela Haaland. From a far-carrying mountain call (kulning) to a wanderer's song to folk songs, psalms, and music tried and true by composers such as Bellman, Taube, Stenhammar, Peterson-Berger, and Sofia Karlsson, Haaland sings and describe a variety of music pieces from Sweden on this lyrical journey.

ASI Annual Meeting

All ASI members are welcome and encouraged to attend the 2015 membership meeting of the American Swedish Institute. Share ideas, meet new friends, sterngthen our community. ASI members will recieve reports about last year's accomplishments and elect a new class to the ASI Board of Trustees for a term beginning July 2015. Light refreshments will be served.
