Adult Slöjd Workshop – Intro to Saddle Stitched Leather

Wednesday, March 1, 2017 - 6:30pm to 8:30pm

This class meets for 3 Wednesdays, Mar. 1, 8, 15 from 6:30-8:30pm

Is it time to retire that worn, tape-repaired wallet? Does your journal need a sturdy, protective case? In this class you will learn the art of hand sewing vegetable-tanned leather with a traditional two-needle saddle stitch and waxed linen thread. We will begin by making a simple card case to master the stitch, and then students will be able to design other small items like a wallet, notebook case, or clutch bag. We will touch on leather selection, sewing technique, tools, patternmaking, wet-molding, hardware (rivets, snaps, etc), and finishes. This is a fun and creative class that brings the heritage of traditional materials and processes into our daily lives.

Vegetable-tanned leather begins as a pale buff color and develops a rich toffee patina over time.

No prior sewing experience is necessary, but this class will require good hand dexterity. Bring your reading glasses if you need them!
