CANCELLED Nordic Craft Workshop: Birch Bark Baking Basket

Saturday, October 5, 2019 - 10:00am

This class meets on Saturday, October 5, from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Sunday, October 6, from 1-5 p.m.

Even if you’re a passionate bread baker or basket weaver, have you ever heard of baking bread in a woven birch bark basket? Not only is it possible, but it’s delicious! In this two-part class, students will work with two experienced instructors to weave their own baking basket out of local birch bark, and then prepare the basket and bread dough for baking a handsome farmhouse style loaf. Students will head home with a utilitarian basket that will last for months of baking, as well as two loaves of bread.

On the first day, students will use pre-processed birch bark weavers to weave a double diagonal-plaited weave 8” x 6” baking basket, while discussing the traditions, harvesting and techniques of birch bark’s use for basketry. The baskets will be conditioned overnight for baking with sunflower oil. On the second day, students will practice the fundamentals of baking farmhouse style yeasted loaf breads, perfect for slicing for toast or sandwiches. We’ll emphasize the use of local ingredients and take some inspiration from Scandinavian and Midwestern bread baking traditions. Students should have considerable hand strength and dexterity for this class.

An additional $60 materials fee is payable to the instructors (Beth Homa-Kraus and Erin Swenson-Klatt)
