CANCELLED Nordic Craft Workshop: Birch Bark Boxes with Fred Livesay

Friday, November 8, 2019 - 5:00pm

This class meets on Friday, November 8, from 5-8 p.m.; Saturday, November 9, from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.; and Sunday, November 10, from 1-5 p.m.

Birch bark boxes have been useful containers for Scandinavians for centuries, used to hold valuable commodities such as coffee, tea, salt, butter or snuff. From small pocket sized boxes to larger containers for pantry goods, these containers are nearly air tight, last indefinitely with care, and are beautiful. Learn how to make your own small box out of birch bark with a wooden base and lid. You’ll practice preparing birch bark, fitting the base and lid, carving the lid to fit with a carving knife, and creating birch bark finger joints, all using a mix of traditional and modern tools and techniques. Your finished box will be the perfect place to stash keepsakes, change, jewelry, and anything else you can think of. Students need some hand strength and dexterity to succeed in this class.

An additional $40 materials fee is payable to the instructor.
