Solar Egg - Bigert and Bergstrom

Eggstravaganza - Solar Egg Opening Night

Wednesday, March 6, 2019 - 6:00pm to 8:00pm

Meet the Artists on Opening Night

Join ASI and visiting Swedish artists Mats Bigert and Lars Bergström for the opening of ASI's new experiential exhibition, Reflect: Bigert & Bergström. Celebrate the arrival of their featured Solar Egg by Bigert & Bergström for Riksbyggen, a five-meter-tall golden egg sculpture that's also a functional sauna.

The evening will begin with a film screening of Mats and Lars' The Weather War, followed by a talk by the artists entitled, "If You Don't Like the Weather, Change It." There will be a Q&A session afterwards where audience members will be able to further learn about the process behind their climate-inspired work.

Mats and Lars will also help fire up the very first sauna. Fun Fact: ASI is the first place the Solar Egg has been installed in the US!

Food and drinks will be available for puchase from FIKA during the event.

About Solar Egg

Taking residence in ASI’s outdoor courtyard from March 6 to April 28, 2019, the Solar Egg sculpture is made of wood and covered in a stainless golden mirror surface. Its many facets reflect its surroundings and the sauna acts as a chamber for the exchange of ideas. In the center of the egg is a wood-fired, heart-shaped sauna stove made of iron and stone, and the temperature reaches between 75° and 85°C (or 167° to 185° F)!

The Swedish artist duo of Bigert & Bergström, two of Sweden’s most notable international climate-focused artists, created the egg for the Swedish housing developer Riksbyggen to stand as a symbol of new beginnings in Kiruna. The sauna holds a key position in Nordic countries as a space for warmth and reflection.

This town is currently undergoing a physical move to make way for an iron ore mine that drives its economy. In Kiruna, the landscape, mine, town, sky, sun and snow combine into a fragmented image that evokes association of the complexities spanned by the discussion about climate and sustainable community development.
