Henrik Williams: The Vikings Begin … with Runes

Friday, September 27, 2019 - 6:30pm

The world of runes is one of wonders.

Runic inscriptions are the only original sources from the Viking world. On runestones we meet the messages of the Vikings themselves, and this lecture will focus on particularly fascinating runic items from all over the world.

About Henrik:

Henrik Williams is an authority in Old Norse languages and a Professor of Scandinavian Languages at Sweden’s Uppsala University. Williams lectures on topics encompassing the Vikings, runes, Old Swedish and Old Icelandic. As a philologist, he studies languages in written historical sources, essentially combining literary criticism, history and linguistics.  A 40-year Minnesota Vikings football fan since his year here as an exchange student, in 2016 Williams advised the team on the authenticity and meaning of its symbols in order to debunk disinformation on Nordic myths and Viking symbols.

On September 26, at 10:30 a.m., he will also give a talk titled The Importance of Runic Inscriptions for History--And the Dangers of Fake History in Runology at the University of Minnesota Carlson School of Management, 321 19th Avenue South, Minneapolis.
