Languages of Sweden, Past and Present

What languages have historically belonged to Sweden? Which are the official minority languages of Sweden? For example, we’ll look at Finnish, Sami, Romany and Yiddish. How has the body of languages in Sweden changed over time, and which languages exist in today's Sweden? This class, conducted in English, offers an overview of the official and unofficial minority languages of Sweden. We will listen to a variety of Swedish dialects, learn where and why Swedish has existed in small isolated pockets of the world, and look at the etymology of Swedish names of places today and what they mean.
