Nordic Craft Workshop: Birch Bark Weaving with Vladimir Yarish

Internationally recognized instructor and artist Vladimir Yarish returns to ASI this May! This 2-day "Master Class" will incorporate a variety of Russian birch bark patterns, including both straight weave and the diagonal plaited weave. Students will choose from projects found in Vladimir’s course list, such as mini baskets of various shapes, birch canisters with spruce root trim, and footed baskets with saw-tooth trim. Participants will also learn about the historical and contemporary regard of the white paper birch tree in Novgorod, Russia.

Vladimir Yarish is an awarded birch bark weaver from Veliky Novgorod, Russia. Educated as a musician, Vladimir graduated from the St. Petersburg State University of Culture and Arts and began birch bark basket weaving in 1984 after being taught by a friend. Since then he has continued to weave and study the uses and history of birch bark, and has published a number of literary works and received prizes for his art. He has taught numerous times in the United States, including classes at ASI, the National Basketry Organization, and North House Folk School.

Course project list available by contacting ASI. Materials range from $40-$150+ depending upon the size of the project and materials fee is payable directly to the instructor.

This is a 2-day class and meets:

  • Saturday, May 5, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
  • Sunday, May 6, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
