Nordic Craft Master Class - "Take Away Everything that is not a Horse"

Monday, January 22, 2018 - 10:00am to 4:00pm

Celebrate ASI’s own CraftBOWL exhibit with a master class by acclaimed Swedish slöjder Jögge Sundqvist, and professional woodworker Jim Sannerud.  This one-day class is designed to be an inspiring and elaborating boost for woodworkers who have a connection to traditional woodwork.  In the morning, the group will discuss the importance of setting context by asking questions like, how are we inspired by traditional woodwork, how does the process of using hand tools affect overall quality and design, and additionally, what is the interaction between material choice and work process?

After lunch the group will work on a free form task; as Jögge puts it to “Find the soul of the tool.”  The class participants explore ways to quickly rough out forms by discovering the three dimensions; sighting angles, axe techniques, splitting with the froe.

The day will end with a fika (coffee, treat, and chat) about context.

Jögge Sundkvist is a feature artist in ASI’s CraftBOWL exhibit hailing from Umeå, in Northern Sweden.
Jim Sannerud is a professional furniture designer and maker from Grand Marais, Minnesota.

A $15 materials fee is payable to the instructor. Please bring your carving axe as well as favorite slöjd knife.

Cost:
$85 ASI members / $95 non-members
