Nordic Craft Workshop: Beginning Saami-Inspired Bracelets

Friday, February 9, 2018 - 9:00am to 5:00pm

Students will braid traditional pewter coiled thread and sew this braid to a reindeer hide strip to make an intricate Saami-Inspired Bracelet. In the Beginning Class, learn how to create a simple double braid bracelet. The techniques are drawn from an oral tradition passed down over 100 years by the Saami, the indigenous people of Northern Scandinavia. Students learn by watching and engaging in a “living” tradition.

Liz Bucheit creates jewelry and body adornment inspired by Scandinavian folklore and myth. A goldsmith for over 30 years, she holds a Master’s degree in metalworking and jewelry from the University of Iowa, Iowa City and has trained in traditional jewelry and metalworking techniques in Ireland and Norway. Liz has taught this course and others before at ASI as a part of our regular handcraft programming as well as during the Great Makers Exchange.

A materials fee of $95 is payable to the instructor (includes pewter thread & reindeer hide).

Registration is required at least one week in advance; please call for availability after that date.

Students who take this beginning course will be prepared to register for the Advanced Bracelet class on Saturday, Feb. 10 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
