Nordic Craft Workshop: Birch Bark Star Ornament

Friday, December 15, 2017 - 11:00am to 3:00pm

JUST ADDED! Nordic Craft Workshop: 5-Point Birch Bark Basket

The striking white paper bark from a birch tree can be used to create many beautiful things, including a birch bark, northern star ornament. Careful folding, some string and a bit of patience will reward students with two lovely birch bark treasures for their holiday decorating. Explore the joys of working with bark while learning about sustainable harvest and processing.

Beth Homa is a full-time basket weaver in Minnesota.  She worked/studied at the North House Folk School in Grand Marais where she learned traditional crafts including boat building, but focused on different styles of basketry.  This sparked her obsession with birch bark.  She locally and sustainably harvests and processes her own materials by hand.  Beth teaches birch basketry classes at North House, American Swedish Institute, the Weavers’ Guild and hosts an annual Basket Camp.  Through communal learning, public demonstrations and facilitating harvests, she shares her love for this durable and beautiful material.
