Nordic Craft Workshop: Intro to Knife Skills with Carved Butter Spreaders

This evening session will introduce you to the fundamentals of knife work needed for green woodworking – a timeless Scandinavian tradition. You will carve your very own butter spreader, spatula or letter-opener to use in your home, office or even lunchbox! Students will be taught a variety of safe knife grips and techniques and will be introduced to finding wood and tool maintenance. This class is designed to introduce beginner carvers to the carving knife and equip them with skills to continue exploring carving on their own.

Youth 14-17 are welcome to register alongside an adult student.

A $10 materials fee is payable to the instructor.

Instructor Josh Torkelson is a sculptor, photographer and maker of all sorts. He is fascinated by the intersections of traditional craft, artistic practice and community building. As a young Cub Scout, Josh fell in love with handicraft work, but really fell in deep while immersed in the traditional craft community at St. Olaf college. Josh has studied numerous crafts including basket weaving, bookbinding, historic-process photography and ceramics. He has taught at Articulture Minneapolis, St. Olaf College and the Northfield Arts Guild. Josh hopes to spread the maker-bug to everyone he meets. See more of his work at
