Nordic Craft Workshop: Practicing the Techniques for a Knitted Sámi Mitten

Explore the little-known practice of Sámi knitting in this class for adventurous beginners and intermediate knitters! The Sámi are Scandinavia’s only UN-recognized indigenous people, and have inhabited northern Scandinavia, Finland, and Russia for centuries. By the mid-1800s, we know from photographic evidence that the Sámi were creating their own unique knitwear, mostly hand garments. Sami knitwear is characterized by decorative cuffs, peasant thumbs, and beautiful braids and tassels.

In this class we will discuss and practice these techniques while creating a sample “mini mitten.” Knitters should be able to cast on, knit, purl, knit in the round, and have some experience working with multiple colors.
