Nordic Craft Workshop: Spoon Carving presented by Women’s Woodshop

In this workshop, learn how to carve a spoon from a fresh cut tree using traditional Nordic slöjd carving techniques. Students will learn about tree anatomy and how to work with fresh wood, techniques for axing out a blank or rough spoon shape, knife holds for the hook and slöjd knife, and drying and finishing.

Great for beginners and new learners, this class is led by Jess Hirsch, founder of The Women’s Woodshop, a new Minneapolis organization that specializes in classes for women and non-binary craftspeople. The Women’s Woodshop offers a supportive environment where students work at their own pace and encourages equality within the woodworking field.

Open to participants 18 and older. Ages 12-17 may register with a paid adult.

A $20 materials fee is payable to the instructor.

Jess Hirsch, founder of Women’s Woodshop received her MFA from the University of Minnesota in sculpture. She apprenticed with Jim Sannerud studying slöjd through the Minnesota State Arts Board Folk and Traditional Art grant.
