Nordic Craft Workshop: Weaving the Birch Bark Field Pouch with Beth Homa Kraus

Saturday, July 27, 2019 - 10:00am to Sunday, July 28, 2019 - 5:00pm

This workshop meets over 2 days: Saturday, July 27 & Sunday, July 28, from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. each day

Explore birch bark weaving and leatherwork in this two-day class to make a small field pouch.

Students will be introduced to the history and ecology of birch trees and discuss sustainable harvesting practices for birch bark, and try their hand at processing birch bark in preparation for weaving. Then, using prepared weavers, students will weave the base of their pouch using a diagonal plaited weave. On the second day, students will prepare and attach a leather flap and handle and make the finishing touches, then leave with a sturdy and attention-grabbing pouch ready to use as a small purse or tool kit for years to come.

Students need no prior basket weaving experience, but should have good finger dexterity and hand strength. Minimum participation age 16.

Materials fees are paid directly to the instructor and vary depending on finishing, about $75-$100.

Registration recommended by July 19.
