Nordic Table Lecture: From Peasant’s Hearths to Feast Tables, the Foods of Medieval and Renaissance Scandinavia with Daniel Serra

Swedish food historian and lecturer Daniel Serra returns to ASI to explore the foods of medieval and renaissance Sweden in all levels of society. As Scandinavia moved out of the Viking Age, increased contact with the rest of Europe had enormous impact on the food culture of the upper classes. Serra’s current projects include the translation of Scandinavia’s earliest known cookbook from the 13th century, and he will draw on the revelations from that translation as well as archeology and his longtime scholarship in Scandinavian food history to paint a picture of Swedish society and cuisine during an era of transformation.
