Nordic Table Workshop: Smörgås, the Open-Faced Sandwich

The open-faced sandwich is so important to Scandinavian culture that there is a word for the teeth marks created when biting into a well-buttered slice of bread: tandsmør (literally, “tooth butter”). The Nordic people take open-face sandwiches to artistic heights. Each country has its own spin, and the sometimes elegant, always delicious, smörgås is Sweden’s version. We’ll make our own Swedish rye bread and top it with a variety of ingredients: vegetables, fish and, yes, butter. We’ll also create our own chocolate “Lazy Mom” sandwiches.
