SOLD OUT Nordic Handcraft Workshop: Scandinavian Style Spoon Carving with Paul Linden

Thursday, May 6, 2021 - 7:00pm
There is an additional session later this summer: Thursdays July 29-September 30, 7-9 p.m.

Join ASI on the front lawn this summer for a 10-week in-person spoon carving course. This class uses spoons and other small projects to explore intermediate and advanced techniques of woodworking with a knife and other hand tools in the spirit of slöjd, the Swedish handcraft tradition of creating beautiful and functional objects. Students will build skills with traditional hand tools and green wood, and also cover tool maintenance/sharpening, acquiring materials, and design and embellishment. The weekly format will allow ample time to absorb information and practice between classes, and to make projects and gain skills at your own pace. Students should have some experience working with hand tools, carving knives and wood, and must have good hand strength and flexibility to be successful in this class – if you can open a pickle jar, you can carve a spoon!

This course will be held outdoors on ASI’s front lawn, with appropriate safety and social distancing measures. Two weeks after the scheduled 10-week course will be held for rain dates in the case of cancellation due to poor weather. Tools are provided but students are also encouraged to bring their own; carving knives can be purchased from the ASI Museum Store.

More information on ASI's in-person programming procedures.

A $40 materials fee is payable to the instructor the first night of class.

$225 ASI members / $250 non-members
