The stunning white paper bark from the birch tree is an iconic northern material. This holiday, create two beautiful, Nordic-style star ornaments for display or gifting. Students will have the chance to work with this unique natural material, harvested by the instructor, while learning about the ecology, harvest and processing of the bark. Careful folding and lots of patience will be rewarded with two beautiful birch bark star ornaments.
Students may pick up their materials kit at ASI or have it shipped for an additional $5 fee.
Please note that this class requires some hand strength and good finger dexterity. The birch bark is usually treated with walnut oil, so if you have a nut allergy, please let us know during registration so the instructor can prepare a nut-free kit for you.
ASI is pleased to offer this course as part of a pilot initiative to welcome students from historically underrepresented groups and cultural communities into our handcraft classes at a reduced price. Limited spaces are available for $15, with the difference covered by ASI and by the instructor waiving the materials fee. Please register here.
NOTE: The course instructor has used sustainable harvesting methods with appropriate government permits to harvest the birch bark used in this class, which comes from the traditional lands of the region's Indigenous people. Beth will provide the course materials to students from historically underrepresented groups and cultural communities for no fee by request. Please use code BIRCH35 during checkout.
