SOLD OUT Virtual Nordic Handcraft Workshop: Botanical Dyeing at Home with Lesley Darling

Wednesday, April 7, 2021 - 5:00pm

This class meets online Wednesdays, April 7-28, from 5-7 p.m. each time

Get started with natural dyeing at home in this four-week class! This workshop is designed for novice natural dyers who want to figure out the best ways to start dyeing with natural botanicals at home. Students will receive materials for two silk scarf projects (using madder root and marigolds) and source their own materials for one dye project themselves from common kitchen ingredients. Students are encouraged to start saving onion skins upon registration! The first three weeks will be used to introduce concepts and techniques for each of the three dye projects, which students can complete at any point between classes, and the last week to share results and learning. Topics covered will include creating dye baths, bundle dyeing, working with protein based and cellulose based textiles, selection of tools and materials, using mordants and more.

This is a live virtual class taught over Zoom. Students need a strong internet connection and a device with video capabilities.

Kits are included in the class fee. Each kit includes two silk scarves, alum, washing soda, madder root and marigolds. Students must also provide a dye container (many options, discussed the first week), a cotton item for their third dye project (such as socks, a tea towel, pillowcase, etc.) and a few common kitchen ingredients. Kits will be available for pick up at the American Swedish Institute April 1-3, or can be shipped for an additional $10 fee. Registration for kit-based classes closes one week in advance on March 31.
