SOLD OUT Virtual Nordic Handcraft Workshop: Intro to Spoon Carving with Jess Hirsch for Women & Nonbinary Students

Try out spoon carving from home in the green woodcarving tradition! Jess Hirsch will lead students through the process of carving a spoon over Zoom, using a prepared wooden blank and rented tools. Jess will walk students through the steps she took before class to select a tree, cut and prepare the fresh wood for carving, and axe out the blanks which will be ready for carving. Then, together students will go through safe knife holds and the steps to carve their very own cooking spoon! The class will wrap up with a discussion of finishing techniques and care. Carving is just as safe as cooking at home; students only need good hand strength and flexibility to carve their own spoon. Please note that the January 13 session is open to students who identify as women and non-binary only. There is another session on March 17 that is open to all.

This is a live virtual class taught over Zoom. Students need a strong internet connection and a device with video capabilities.

This class includes a kit with a spoon blank, sand paper and oil to finish your spoon, as well as carving knives and gloves to use and return to ASI. Kits will be available for pick up at the American Swedish Institute January 7-10, or can be shipped for an additional $15 fee. Registration for kit-based classes closes one week in advance on January 9. This class would be appropriate for a participant age 12 and up who was is registered with an adult.
