Viking University Day II

This morning of lectures by some of the world’s foremost experts focuses on aspects of Viking-Age society that expand beyond The Vikings Begin exhibition, including real people in the Viking age, Old Norse sagas in archaeology and the Vikings in North America.  Make sure to see the exhibition before it closes on Sunday, October 27.

The presenters and their talks include:

Charlotte Hedenstierna-Jonson, Ph.D. – Dept. of Archaeology and Ancient History, Uppsala University, Sweden

  • Real People of the Viking Age – introducing some of the residents in the Viking Age town of Birka, Sweden. Hedenstierna-Jonson’s research projects include those which have focused on warfare, identities, mobility and material culture in Viking Age societies.

Birgitta Wallace – Senior Archaeologist with Parks Canada 

  • The L'Anse aux Meadows Viking Site: The Gateway to Vinland and Its People. A talk of great interest for those who wish to know more about the Vikings in North America.

Jesse L. Byock, Ph.D. – Professor of Old Norse and Medieval Scandinavian, UCLA & Professor of Archaeology, Cotsen Institute of Archaeology, UCLA

  • Viking Archaeology in Iceland: The Role of Old Norse and Sagas in Excavation Discovery. This talk focuses on recent findings from the Mosfell Archeaological Project in Iceland, an interdisciplinary excavation project that uses information in the ancient sagas to help guide the work.

Emily Peschel – Ph.D. Candidate, University of Calgary, Alberta

  • Migration at the Center of the Viking World.  This talk is based upon doctorate research about the far-ranging migration of the Vikings.
