VIRTUAL Nordic Handcraft Lecture: Intro to Swedish Dalmålning with Pieper Bloomquist

Saturday, October 24, 2020 - 2:00pm to 4:00pm

You’ve probably seen kurbits, an iconic folk art pattern from central Sweden, many times without knowing precisely what you’re looking at. Originating in the central Swedish province of Dalarna in the 1700s and 1800s, this style is typical of Dalmålning paintings, which adorned the interior of farm houses on large wall canvasses and depicted both current events and biblical stories. Join folk artist Pieper Bloomquist for this lecture on the history of Dalmålning and how Pieper has adapted these conventions to contemporary stories in her own paintings. Pieper will also walk registrants through how to get started with composing a painting of their own, using some of her own dalmålningar as examples. This lecture is appropriate both for anyone interested in Swedish folk art and history, and for anyone who hopes to join Pieper for a Dalmålning class in the future.

This is a live virtual class taught over Zoom. Students need a strong internet connection and a device with video capabilities to participate.

Pieper is offering a second lecture on a different Swedish painting technique on November 7. Register for both lectures together to receive a $5 discount

Cost:
