VIRTUAL Nordic Handcraft Lecture: Southern Swedish Bonadsmålning with Pieper Bloomquist

Saturday, November 7, 2020 - 2:00pm to 4:00pm

Sometimes referred to as “Jultepeter” or “Christmas Wallpaper,” Swedish Bonadsmålning flourished in southern Sweden (Småland and Halland) during the 18th and 19th centuries. Many farmhouses were beautifully decorated with these painted “bonads,” inspired by medieval tapestries and church art. In this lecture, Pieper Bloomquist will introduce you to these charming, and sometimes comical, paintings that depicted biblical and allegorical stories. We will learn who painted them, how the artists chose the themes, and how they were used as decoration. This lecture proves to be fun and fascinating for anyone interested in a bit of art history or learning more about Swedish folk painting. A bonad painter herself, Pieper will also share her own work which incorporates contemporary stories into this centuries-old folk art.

This is a live virtual class taught over Zoom. Students need a strong internet connection and a device with video capabilities.

Pieper is offering a second lecture on a different Swedish painting technique on October 24. Register for both lectures together to receive a $5 discount!
