Virtual Nordic Handcraft Workshop: Castle in the City – Playing with Architecture with Tara Sweeney

Tuesday, August 4, 2020 - 9:00am

This online class takes place Tuesday-Thursday, August 4-6, from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. each day

Are you ready to doodle and explore playful lines, simple shapes and lively colors this summer? This fun class with artist Tara Sweeney (featured in our latest exhibition extra/ordinary: The American Swedish Institute: At Play) utilizes ink and watercolor paints, along with the numbers 0 through 9 and the letters A to ZÅÄÖ, to provide surprising starting points for assembling architectural details large and small. Students will follow Tara’s exercises to build a city and imagine a castle on the page, including inspiration from the Turnblad Mansion.

This is a class for adults who need to get a little artistic energy or pick up new practices to spark creativity, and for intergenerational pairs or small groups to practice art together at home this summer. Any number of children ages 6-16 years are welcome to work along at home with an adult free of charge (teens are also welcome to register alone as adults). This workshop is taught virtually over Zoom, through daily live stream demos, step-by-step guidelines and templates, class sharing time, and instructor feedback so that students can work along from home. Please see the materials list and sample daily schedule to get an idea of whether this class is right for you. The class is small and will meet students where they are at; all levels of ability welcome. Students must have access to strong internet, a computer or tablet with video capability, and will need a Google account to join the workshop’s Google classroom.

We believe that everyone’s home is a castle worth protecting: A portion of the tuition fees from this workshop will be redirected to the new ASI Community Fund to directly support relief efforts in the Phillips West neighborhood, which has been deeply affected by both COVID-19 and unrest in Minneapolis.
