VIRTUAL Nordic Handcraft Workshop: Knitting Inari Cuff Mittens with Laura Ricketts

Sunday, November 1, 2020 - 1:00pm

This class meets online over 3 Saturdays – November 1, 8 & 15 – from 1-3 p.m. each week

Join knitwear historian and designer Laura Ricketts to tackle an interesting and beautiful new mitten pattern. These beautiful mittens might catch your eye for their festive colors and graphic pattern, but this class will take you deeper into their more advanced techniques and their important history. The Inari cuff mitten pattern is reproduced from a pair of historic mittens in the Siida Sami Museum in Inari, Finland – homeland of Finland’s indigenous Inari Sami group. This particular pattern is well suited to an intermediate to advanced knitter and introduces several advanced techniques, including three strand knitting and long floats in the cuff, unique curved shaping techniques in the hand and thumbs, and a finishing braid and tassel.

Students will meet over three weeks on Zoom for live tutorials, and will need to work outside of class using the pattern and some supplemental videos. By the end of the three weeks, you will have all the skills you need to complete a pair of mittens, just in time for winter and the holidays!

Students will need to purchase the materials in advance of class; please see materials list below. Registration for this class includes the digital pattern for students to download and print ($8, non-refundable).
