Virtual Nordic Handcraft Workshop: Spinning Yarn with Sticks and Stones with Lesley Darling

Wednesday, June 2, 2021 - 5:00pm
This class takes place Wednesdays June 2 & 9 from 5-7 p.m.

Curious about making yarn but not sure about a spinning wheel? Believe it or not, the spinning wheel is still a NEW technology, and the traditional method is just as fun. In this beginning spinner's workshop, you’ll learn basic hand-spinning techniques on a supported spindle. This method is much less "stressful" than the drop spindle, so no "klunks" as you're learning! The class will discuss fiber types, processing, spinning styles and more. Your kit for the workshop includes your very own spindle, plenty of hand processed wool fibers in various breeds, plus roving and more. This class requires moderate manual dexterity, such as thumb and index finger contact, and welcomes students ages 12-15 alongside a registered adult.

This is a live virtual class taught over Zoom. Students need a strong internet connection and a device with video capabilities.

Kits ($28 value) are included in the class fee. Each kit includes a spindle and lots of wool and roving to work with. Kits will be available for pick up at the American Swedish Institute one week before class, May 27-30, from 10-4 daily, or can be shipped for an additional $10 fee. Registration for this class closes on May 23 so ASI can prep kits.
