Virtual Nordic Handcraft Workshop: Växtfärgat – Playing with Natural Dye on Yarn with Lesley Darling

Thursday, May 6, 2021 - 5:00pm to 7:00pm
Learn the basics of natural dyeing and play around with some methods for layering color. From water quality, pH, metallic salts and more, you'll explore various approaches to dyeing yarn, including modifying colors and using resist techniques to create multi-color effects (called flämgarn in Swedish). During this two-week class, you’ll learn the dyeing process together and complete your dyeing throughout the week.  Students will get to choose what techniques they are most intrigued by to make their own unique yarns.

This is a live virtual class taught over Zoom. Students need a strong internet connection and a device with video capabilities.

Kits ($40 value) are included in the class fee. Each kit includes yarn, plant-based dye and mordants. Students must also provide a dye vessel (options will be discussed the first week), craft-only stir stick, cotton string, baking soda, rubber gloves, anti-acid tablets such as Tums, and red or yellow onion skins (save them up after registering!). Kits will be available for pick up at the American Swedish Institute one week before class, April 22-25 from 10-4, or can be shipped for an additional $10 fee. Registration for this class closes April 18 so ASI has time to prep kits.
