Winter Solstice Celebration

Mark the Winter Solstice at American Swedish Institute!

This is the special moment, especially in Nordic countries with long winters, and global turning point when the earth's tilt brings the shortest day and longest night of the year. Dress to enjoy the ASI's magical winter courtyard, see a live reindeer, hop on kick sled and cuddle up next to a bonfire! Catch a variety of musical performances, enjoy crafts and Festival food & beverages, shadow selfies, and a pop-up performance of the theatre group Impossible Salt as they share their new musical story, the Wise One, based on a Norwegian folktale.

Here is the evening's schedule

  • 5 p.m. – Nyckelharpalag - folk music ensemble
  • 5:30 p.m. – Story time with Anja from Christmas Wish book series
  • 6 p.m. – Hunky Dory Scandinavian All Stars - music (roaming)
  • 7 p.m. – Impossible Salt - theatre performance (3rd Floor Mansion Ballroom)
  • 8 p.m. – Romanian Duo - music (3rd Floor Mansion Ballroom)

Enjoy family handcraft activities and take a self-guided tour of the Turnblad Mansion's Fest! Merry Mansion decorated holiday rooms.

Meet the author of the New York Times bestselling series The Christmas Wish! Grab a copy of one of their Nordic fairy tale books in the ASI Museum store and have it signed by the creators. Anja, the star and Per, the photographer, will also be signing books!

FIKA Café will be open and offering a festival menu of small plates, wine, beer, cocktails and glögg - our signature and delicious Swedish mulled wine. Plus gourmet artisan s'mores available for purchase from North Mallow Co.  

The ASI Museum Store and Jul Shop are also open late for all of your last minute gift-giving and decorating needs!

Included in Museum admission, please purchase at the door. No advanced registration required.
$10 adults; $7 seniors; $5 ages 6-18 and students with ID. Free for kids under 6 and ASI members.
