Youth and Family Programs

The American Swedish Institute's Youth and Family Programming is extensive, varied, fun and welcoming to kids of all skill levels and backgrounds (and their grown-ups). ASI's eclectic range of creative activities and offerings includes: the Turnblad Mansion's Third Floor Family Gallery with rotating installations and an interactive play area; our regular Family Days and Kids at the Castle events; Youth Slöjd (Craft) Workshops; and our extended school year class sessions such as Svenska Skolan, which mixes Swedish language with music and games for kids ages 4 to 13, and På Gång, a Sunday afternoon Swedish class/social club for teens.

We encourage young people to explore their creative side through play, craft and language learning. Kids can express themselves, expand their imagination and develop a sense of innovation and experimentation through open-ended creativity.  Hands-on, interactive activities can build life-long skills and open up alternative perspectives of the world.

    Summer Slöjd Youth Handcraft: Make a Mini Book

    Wednesdays at ASI are fun for all ages this summer! Join the American Swedish Institute for our Wednesday afternoon Summer Slöjd Youth Handcraft series! Taking inspiration from the Swedish tradition of slöjd, or handcraft, young makers will create beautiful and useful objects while working with new materials. An adult is welcome to register alongside their young student and complete a project as well. August 1: Make a Mini Book – Go wild with paper and create your own sketchbook or journal!

    Nordic Craft Workshop: SAORI Weaving Intergenerational Session

    • Saturday, October 13, 2018 - 1:00pm to 4:00pm
    Calling all crafty families! The Saturday, October 13 SAORI Weaving Workshop is designed for ages 12 and up and is the perfect opportunity for grandparents, parents, and youth to try something new together. Each student will work on their own loom. SAORI weaving is an expressive, “freestyle” weaving process, blending color into a beautiful piece of fabric you will take home. The prepared floor looms allow students to jump right in, regardless of previous weaving experience. Come ready to take part in this joyful process and exercise your creativity!

    Youth Nordic Craft Workshop: Decorated Pockets with Kristina Hagander

    • Tuesday, August 7, 2018 - 1:00pm to 5:00pm
    Youth Nordic Craft Workshop: Decorated Pockets with Kristina Hagander Join guest artist Kristina Hagander from Sweden to explore the colors and techniques of traditional textiles in this special class. Kristina will work with students (ages 13-17) to make a small felt pocket inspired by Swedish traditional folk dress. Choose your own colors and needle felt a design before finishing up the edges with beautiful woven ribbons. Your pocket will make a sturdy pouch or sweet purse, perfect for keeping small treasures.

    Pippi Day Camp The world’s favorite red-headed heroine is the inspiration for this day of adventure! Participants are encouraged to dress like Pippi or her friends. Pippi Day Camp also held on: Thursday, July 19, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.  Summer Day Camps are tailored for young minds entering grades 1-5. Through story-telling, cooking, art and imaginative play, children will have fun exploring Minneapolis’ only castle and learning about Nordic history and culture.

Inspired by the season and ASI exhibitions, Kids at the Castle is encourages adventurous and curious young minds through circle time, storytelling, crafts, visual play, and music and movement.

    Family Slöjd: All Souls Day Family Collages

    • Saturday, October 27, 2018 - 1:00pm to 4:00pm
    Celebrate your family’s history in preparation for Alla Helgons Afton (All Soul’s Day). This important Swedish holiday on the first Saturday in November is an opportunity for family members to remember their loved ones, often by visiting cemeteries to leave luminaries or flowers. Guest artist Alison Aune, who works in mixed-media collages with a strong influence from Scandinavian design, invites family members to bring copies of photographs and other family mementos to incorporate into collages that will combine design, color and images into a unique piece of art.
    Cost: $55 ASI members / $65 no-members. $20 per child.
