Youth and Family Programs

The American Swedish Institute's Youth and Family Programming is extensive, varied, fun and welcoming to kids of all skill levels and backgrounds (and their grown-ups). ASI's eclectic range of creative activities and offerings includes: the Turnblad Mansion's Third Floor Family Gallery with rotating installations and an interactive play area; our regular Family Days and Kids at the Castle events; Youth Slöjd (Craft) Workshops; and our extended school year class sessions such as Svenska Skolan, which mixes Swedish language with music and games for kids ages 4 to 13, and På Gång, a Sunday afternoon Swedish class/social club for teens.

We encourage young people to explore their creative side through play, craft and language learning. Kids can express themselves, expand their imagination and develop a sense of innovation and experimentation through open-ended creativity.  Hands-on, interactive activities can build life-long skills and open up alternative perspectives of the world.

  • Preschool Program – Easter Feathers and Fun

    • Friday, April 5, 2019 - 10:00am to 11:30am
    Explore Swedish (and Swedish-American) traditions with your little one. Topics will be explored through creative storytelling, music, art and more. Together, we’ll answer the questions of “What do Swedish families do throughout the year?” and “Why do they do it?” This program is specifically designed for children ages 3-5 and their important adults. Adult accompaniment is required (limit 2 adults per child). Preschool Program dates:

    Easter in the Castle

    • Saturday, April 13, 2019 - 9:00am to 10:30am
    ASI celebrates Easter (påsk) by hosting the Twin Cities' only Easter egg hunt in a castle! The whole family will have fun hunting high and low for colorful eggs hidden throughout the nooks and crannies of the 33-room Turnblad Mansion.
    Cost: $10 ASI members / $13 non-members / free for children under age 2.

    Starting with Slöjd: Easter Witches Everywhere

    • Sunday, April 14, 2019 - 1:00pm to 2:00pm
    Join us for a new monthly program for early elementary children who are ready to start crafting! Whether we’re playing with wool, wire, clay or more, we’ll explore new tools, materials and skills that prepare kids for a lifelong love of handcraft, or slöjd. Programs suitable for students in grades K-3. In Easter Witches Everywhere, learn about the Swedish tradition of dressing up like witches…for Easter! Then make your own little witch ready to fly away on his/her broomstick out of fabric, sticks and feathers.

    Make a morning playdate at the Castle!   Also on Saturday, April 20, 9-10 a.m. Mark your calendars for the third Friday and Saturday of every month for this action-packed, kids and family creative playtime. For an hour before the museum opens to the public, families can join us for circle time, storytelling, crafts, visual play, and music inspired by the season. Suggested for ages 2-5. Adults must accompany children.
    Cost: $8 per family. Registration not required.

    ASI's carrier tours for baby and caregiver will immerse you and your young one in ASI’s new exhibition, Imagine: Surreal Photography by Erik Johansson. Tours are about 30 minutes plus 15 minutes of sensory play. Designed for babies up to 15 months. Other Babies at the Castle dates:

    Youth Handcraft: Glass Jewels and Gems

    • Sunday, April 28, 2019 - 2:00pm to 4:00pm
    In this fun afternoon class, students will be introduced to the art of glass fusing while making a set of colorful “jewels” out of cut glass. These jewels will be fused in a glass kiln until smooth, then returned to be used as paperweights, necklace pendants, magnets, or just beautiful gems to keep in a pocket. Open to youth in grades 4-12.

    SAORI Weaving Intergenerational Session

    • Saturday, May 4, 2019 - 1:00pm to 4:00pm
    Weaving is an important tradition in many cultures, especially Scandinavia. Try your hand at a beginner-friendly Japanese weaving technique in this half day class! SAORI weaving is an expressive, “freestyle” weaving process, blending color into a beautiful piece of fabric you will take home. The prepared floor looms allow students to jump right in, regardless of previous weaving experience. Come ready to take part in this joyful process and exercise your creativity!
    Cost: $55 member adult/$65 nonmember adult/$35 youth, $20 materials fee per project
