In-Person Programs FAQ
Where will in-person programs be held at ASI this summer?
All in-person programs will be held outside on our beautiful grounds, with provided shade from open sided tents. In case of severe weather, programs will be cancelled and participants refunded if necessary.
What other safety precautions is ASI taking?
ASI asks that all staff, visitors and volunteers stay 6 feet away from other parties. Hand sanitizer and sanitizing cleaners will be used for cleaning before and during programs. Staff, visitors and volunteers should clean their hands when they arrive on campus, after eating and before using communal program equipment. Finally, if you are feeling unwell, please stay home, even if you have been vaccinated. We will gladly refund or reschedule your registration.
What do I need to bring with me for in-person programs?
Since all in-person programming is outside, please wear weather-appropriate clothing, bring sun protection (sunscreen and/or a hat) and wear a face mask that covers your nose and mouth. Bring an optional water bottle to stay hydrated – water fountains are temporarily closed at ASI.
Why do I need to wear a mask if we are outside?
ASI follows CDC recommendations and guidelines from our local government and health departments. We require all staff, guests, volunteers and instructors to wear a mask when on campus, except while eating.
Do you require students to be vaccinated before coming to campus?
No, you do not need to have received a vaccination before coming to ASI. We are taking appropriate safety precautions so that our classes can continue safely whether or not participants have received a vaccine.
What should I do if I am feeling ill?
If you are experiencing any COVID-like symptoms before a program, including coughing, a fever, loss of taste or nausea, please reach out to ASI immediately to cancel or rescheduled your registration. This applies even if you have previously been vaccinated. For more guidelines about quarantining from the Minnesota Health Department, please see their website. ASI will always refund your registration in full if you cancel for reasons related to COVID.
Will I receive a refund if I need to cancel my registration or ASI cancels a program?
Yes, if you cancel your registration for COVID-19 related reasons, or if ASI cancels an outdoor program for any reason (including severe weather), you will receive a full refund.
All Program Policies & Procedures
All programs are available for registration online, via phone at 612-871-4907 and in person at our front desk during open hours. Full payment must be received for registration to be complete. Please make every effort to register at least one week in advance of an event. Some coursework offers “early bird” discounts for early registrants; please see individual course or event pages for more details. Confirmations for all online registrations will be sent via email. Receipts for phone or in-person registrations are available upon request.
ASI keeps waitlists for filled classes, events, and workshops. Please call 612-871-4907 to be added to a waitlist. ASI will only contact those on waitlists as space becomes available.
If your event is in person, free parking is available in our surface parking lot, located at 27th Street and Park Avenue. Accessible parking is available on the east side of the parking lot. Registrants should stop at the Information Desk in the Nelson Cultural Center for directions to their event or class.
Virtual programs are taught over Zoom. Participants do not need their own Zoom account, but do need a strong internet connection and a device with video capabilities. Some programs are recorded for documentation or teaching purposes. Complete login instructions are typically provided 1 day before a program via email.
Cancellation and Refund Policy
Refunds are not available for cancellations made within one week (seven days) of a program.
While ASI makes every effort to ensure programs and classes run at capacity, ASI reserves the right to cancel a program one week prior to its start date if enrollment has not reached the required minimum. Registrants will be notified by phone or email if a program is cancelled. In the event that ASI cancels a program for any reason, registrants will receive a full refund.
Please allow up to one week for refunds to be processed. Cancellation and refund policies may vary for some programs.
ASI may close and cancel programs in the case of severe weather. ASI contacts program registrants directly in case of weather closures and posts closure information on our website and social media accounts. In the case that ASI remains open for programming during inclement weather, absent registrants are not eligible for refunds.
Some handcraft workshops require additional materials fees for equipment and materials use, payable by cash or check to the instructor at the beginning of class. Some language classes require textbooks and workbooks. The class description will let you know which book you should have. Language books are available in the ASI Museum Store.
Some virtual programs may use kits, included in the course fee. Kits will include some or all of the materials students need to make their project at home. Kits are available for pick up at the American Swedish Institute approximately one week before class or can be shipped for an additional $5 fee; students will be contacted with specific instructions by an ASI staff. Registration for workshops with kits closes one week in advance.
Most programs and events at ASI are open to all ages. Unless otherwise noted, adult workshops are open to ages 16 and older. Some intergenerational workshops may be open to younger registrants alongside registered adults; please see individual program descriptions for more information. Youth programs are designed for specific age groups; all youth registrants should meet age requirements at the time of the course.
In ASI programs, no individual or group will be discriminated against because of race, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, age or disability.
