Summer Language Classes for Adults

Due to the ongoing situation related to COVID-19, ASI language classes will continue to meet virtually through the end of August. Please see our selection of virtual summer classes below. We have now added additional language classes starting in July and August!

Details:

  • We will use the program Zoom for online classes. After you’ve registered, you will receive an email with more detailed information about how to enter the online classroom.
  • Classes starting in July and August run for 4 weeks. There are also one-time classes.  
  • Please see individual class descriptions for more information including cost and materials.

Beginning Swedish - Kort Kurs
Get a quick taste of the Swedish language and lay a great foundation for continued Swedish language study. This class is designed for adult language students with basic or limited experience in second-language learning. This class uses a text titled Kort Kurs (Short Course) which can be purchased exclusively in the ASI Museum Store.
Curious about the Swedish language, but not ready yet to commit to a multi-date class? Try the one-time Intro to Swedish virtual workshop on Sunday, August 2.
 
Continuing Beginning to Intermediate Swedish
 
Start Reading Swedish: Fler svenska hjältinnor Online
Read short texts in Swedish about Swedish women heroes – such as Hilma af Klint, Eve Ekeblad, Karin Boye and more – and explore their works through class activities. Learn some Swedish history and pick up new vocabulary and cultural information while improving your reading skills. This class is suitable for students with at least one year of Swedish language study. Take the June class, the July class or both! Each class will feature different Swedish women heroes. Materials will be provided by instructor. 
Start Reading Swedish: Muminsagor Online
Read short texts in Swedish the about the Mumintrolls. Enjoy the magical world of the Mumintrolls and pick up new vocabulary while improving your reading skills. This class is suitable for students with at least one year of Swedish language study. Materials will be provided by instructor.
 
Intermediate Swedish
This class will be conversation-based, but will also feature reading, writing and listening assignments. Materials will be provided by the instructor. Take this class if you have studied the language between 2-3 years.
 
Swedish Conversation Class
This class is suitable for students who have studied the language for 2+ years. Materials provided by instructor.
Short Stories for Intermediate Students
This class will read one (very) short story in Swedish per week and discuss it together using English where needed.
 
Advanced Swedish
 
Short Stories for Advanced Students
This class will read one (longer) short story per week and discuss it together in Swedish.
 
 
Review Courses
 
Rivstart Review Course 1
This class will focus on the first half of Rivstart A1+A2 (chapter 1-10) and is designed to remind and reinforce areas of study in which you feel rusty or uncertain. 
Rivstart Review Course 2
This class will focus on the second half of Rivstart A1+A2 (chapters 11-20) and is designed to remind and reinforce areas of study in which you feel rusty or uncertain. 
Easing Back into Swedish
This class is designed to help continuing students get back into the groove of learning Swedish prior to the beginning of fall term. Over five Thursdays, we will get reacquainted with the basics of Swedish grammar and conversation by reading and discussing texts and then doing corresponding exercises. The book we will use is Learn Swedish Swedish Reader for Beginners (Hildeman & Beite, Stockholm University), which is available online. This book is not available in the ASI Museum Store.
