Youth Handcraft

Make and play!

Taking inspiration from the Swedish tradition of slöjd, or handcraft, ASI’s Youth Handcraft classes guide children and teens through making beautiful and useful objects while working with new materials. Check out our monthly Starting with Slöjd programs for young makers in grades K-3 and our Youth Handcraft workshops for grades 4-12!

    Babies at the Castle

    • Friday, March 22, 2019 - 9:15am to 10:00am
    ASI's carrier tours for baby and caregiver will immerse you and your young one in ASI’s new exhibition, Imagine: Surreal Photography by Erik Johansson. Tours are about 30 minutes plus 15 minutes of sensory play. Designed for babies up to 15 months. Other Babies at the Castle dates:

  • Intro to Embroidery

    Youth Handcraft: Getting Started with Embroidery

    • Sunday, March 24, 2019 - 2:00pm to 4:00pm
    Get started with the beautiful world of embroidery. Instructor Anna will set up students with the basics, including a pattern and a few basic stitches, and you’ll stitch the afternoon away! Open to students grades 4-12.

    Svenska Skolan: Spring Term Begins

    Svenska Skolan is a Saturday morning language and culture program for students ages 4 to 13 that offers an opportunity for children to learn Swedish while having fun.

  • Preschool Program – Easter Feathers and Fun

    • Friday, April 5, 2019 - 10:00am to 11:30am
    Explore Swedish (and Swedish-American) traditions with your little one. Topics will be explored through creative storytelling, music, art and more. Together, we’ll answer the questions of “What do Swedish families do throughout the year?” and “Why do they do it?” This program is specifically designed for children ages 3-5 and their important adults. Adult accompaniment is required (limit 2 adults per child).

    Easter in the Castle & Egg Hunt

    • Saturday, April 13, 2019 - 9:00am to 10:30am
    ASI celebrates Easter (påsk) by hosting the Twin Cities' only Easter egg hunt in a castle! The whole family will have fun hunting high and low for colorful eggs hidden throughout the nooks and crannies of the 33-room Turnblad Mansion.
    Cost: $10 ASI members / $13 non-members / free for children under age 2.

    Starting with Slöjd: Easter Witches Everywhere

    • Sunday, April 14, 2019 - 1:00pm to 2:00pm
    Join us for a new monthly program for early elementary children who are ready to start crafting! Whether we’re playing with wool, wire, clay or more, we’ll explore new tools, materials and skills that prepare kids for a lifelong love of handcraft, or slöjd. Programs suitable for students in grades K-3. In Easter Witches Everywhere, learn about the Swedish tradition of dressing up like witches…for Easter! Then make your own little witch ready to fly away on his/her broomstick out of fabric, sticks and feathers.

    Kids at the Castle: Everyone's Earth!

    Make a morning playdate at the Castle!   Also on Saturday, April 20, 9-10 a.m. Mark your calendars for the third Friday and Saturday of every month for this action-packed, kids and family creative playtime. For an hour before the museum opens to the public, families can join us for circle time, storytelling, crafts, visual play, and music inspired by the season. Suggested for ages 2-5. Adults must accompany children.
    Cost: $8 per family. Registration not required.

    Svenska för tonåringar / Swedish for Teenagers – Spring Term Begins

    Introducing Svenska för tonåringar (Swedish for teenagers) – a new class for students age 13-18 who are serious about learning Swedish. If you are thinking about traveling to Sweden as an exchange student, wanting to improve your Swedish to communicate with family or friends, or are simply interested in learning more about Swedish culture through language, this is the perfect class for you! In this course, you will speak, write and read in Swedish. Vi talar, skriver och läser på svenska.

  • Svensk Frukost – Breakfast, Music & Heritage with the ASI Male Chorus

    • Saturday, April 6, 2019 - 8:00am to 11:00am
    Join the ASI Male Chorus on April 6, 2019 for their annual Frukost fundraiser. The ticket includes a full breakfast smörgåsbord prepared by the fine chefs at FIKA/Slate and Stone, a selection of traditional Swedish music performed by the chorus and special guests and tours of the Mansion.  Dancing encouraged! Funds from the breakfast support the Male Chorus and help preserve the Swedish choral tradition in the Midwest.
