Youth Handcraft Programs

Make and play!

Make something beautiful and useful in youth only workshops! 

Taking inspiration from the Swedish tradition of slöjd, or handcraft, ASI’s Youth Handcraft classes guide children and teens through making beautiful and useful objects while working with new materials. Our monthly Starting with Slöjd programs for young makers in grades K-3 and our Youth Handcraft workshops for grades 4-12 take a break during the summer months to make way for the Summer Slöjd series – register for one or all five workshops!

    Making Traditions: Music & Family Craft

    Experience the joy of gathering together at ASI throughout the holiday season! Beyond the beautifully decorated rooms in the Turnblad Mansion, on select weekend days there will be free,* drop-in events featuring music, dance, handcraft and more. Some take place during the Julmarknad Christmas Market festival – see below for the schedule. Any visit can become a joyous treat for all ages to build memories and new holiday traditions! Mark your calendars:

    Julglädje (Christmas Joy) Concert

    • Sunday, December 1, 2019 - 1:00pm
    Songs, stories, games and smiles are the hallmarks of julglädje, translated from Swedish as “Christmas joy.” Bring the entire family to join in the fun and create memories at this annual holiday performance hosted by the popular performer Ross Sutter. Ross and his friends, Marya Hart on piano and Cheryl Paschke on nycleharpa and fiddle, play a rollicking collection of Swedish and American holiday tunes that evoke the feeling of standing around the family piano.

    Countdown to Christmas Preschool Program

    Explore the Swedish Advent season though through stories, crafts and activities. Take home your own decorations (to keep the dark at bay) and a pepparkakor (ginger snaps) recipe to make at home!

    Celebrate “Swedish Christmas” at the American Swedish Institute this holiday season! Join us for Lucia’s Legend and explore the legend of Sankta Lucia through stories, crafts and activities. We’ll find out what Swedish families do on Lucia Day and why they do it. Take home your own Lucia crown or Starboy hat, recipes and ideas for creating your own Lucia celebration.

    Lucia Celebration Concert – Morning

    Tickets on sale Monday, November 4 at 10 a.m. – online, by phone, or at the ASI Information Desk. Celebrate light during the long winter in this special Swedish concert featuring the youthful voices of the 2019 ASI Lucia Choir, who performs traditional music in this magical one-hour concert set in Larson Hall. There is also an afternoon concert at 1 p.m.

    Starting with Slöjd: Holiday Paper Quilling

    • Sunday, December 15, 2019 - 1:00pm to 2:00pm
    In December, practice paper quilling to make holiday gifts and cards! About Starting with Slöjd Join us for this monthly program for early elementary children who are ready to start crafting! Whether we’re playing with wool, wire, clay or more, we’ll explore new tools, materials and skills that prepare kids for a lifelong love of handcraft, or slöjd. These drop-off programs are suitable for students in grades K-3. Pre-registration required. Starting with Slöjd dates:
