Youth Handcraft Programs

Make and play!

Make something beautiful and useful in youth only workshops! 

Taking inspiration from the Swedish tradition of slöjd, or handcraft, ASI’s Youth Handcraft classes guide children and teens through making beautiful and useful objects while working with new materials. Our monthly Starting with Slöjd programs for young makers in grades K-3 and our Youth Handcraft workshops for grades 4-12 take a break during the summer months to make way for the Summer Slöjd series – register for one or all five workshops!

    Making Traditions: Music & Family Craft

    Experience the joy of gathering together at ASI throughout the holiday season! Beyond the beautifully decorated rooms in the Turnblad Mansion, on select weekend days there will be free,* drop-in events featuring music, dance, handcraft and more. Some take place during the Julmarknad Christmas Market festival – see below for the schedule. Any visit can become a joyous treat for all ages to build memories and new holiday traditions! Mark your calendars:

    Calling all Mamma Meet-ups, Latte Papas, Grandparents and Nannies! ASI's carrier tours for baby and caregiver will immerse you and your young one in ASI’s holiday exhibition, Time Tested, Tradition Approved. Tours are about 30 minutes plus 15 minutes of sensory play. Designed for babies up to 15 months. More Babies at the Castle dates: Friday, September 27
    Cost: $15 for caregiver and baby. $10 for an additional adult (limit 2 adults per baby).

    Julglädje (Christmas Joy) Concert

    Songs, stories, games and smiles are the hallmarks of julglädje, translated from Swedish as “Christmas joy.” Bring the entire family to join in the fun and create memories at this annual holiday performance hosted by the popular performer Ross Sutter. Ross and his friends, Marya Hart on piano and Cheryl Paschke on nycleharpa and fiddle, play a rollicking collection of Swedish and American holiday tunes that evoke the feeling of standing around the family piano.
    Cost: $10 ASI members / $12 non-members / $5 kids 6-17 / free for kids 5 and under

    Teen Träff – Winter Fest/Solstice Party

    • Friday, December 20, 2019 - 6:00pm to 8:00pm
    Introducing Teen Träff – an activity group for teens interested in Swedish culture. During each meeting from 2-4 p.m., students will participate in a different Swedish cultural activity such as baking cinnamon buns, watching Swedish films, doing slöjd (handcraft), attending cool ASI events and more.
